CONTEST! Win a PRIZE!

Seriously, I’m going to give away a hand-crafted, super awesome, “tool” that every world saver needs.  I thought about not telling you what the prize is because, quite frankly, I’m concerned you won’t be as excited about the prize as I am and you won’t participate in the contest because you don’t care about the prize.  Then I said, “No, Jen.  Your readers are better than that.  They want to save the world.  Or they at least know someone that does.”  So here it is. I’m giving away 1 handmade (by yours truly) lunch bag (as seen this post).

All you have to do is...(*drumroll*)…tell me what you did to save the world this week.  Remember, my definition of world saving habits is pretty broad.  So, respond in the comments with what you are doing by Friday, July 30th (I’m giving you plenty of time to do something just in case you haven’t so you don’t have to lie).   I will use a random number generator to select the winner.  Since it’s a random number generator, I suppose you could say you’ve done nothing at all or write gibberish and it won’t really matter…but you wouldn’t do that, would you?  Only 2 comments per contestant please (2 is my favorite number).

Just to entice you further, I’ll let the big winner pick the colors of the lunch bag .   For those of you who already received one of my lunch bags, I do think it will be a good gift.  Or you’ll have a spare.  When I wash mine, I don’t dry it, so I could use a spare myself.  I’ll mail you the prize as soon as I finish it.  It will be “soon” but I don’t know how soon (I’m a busy girl, people, saving the world is not easy work).

I'm never lucky with these things... but I actually do something that counts. Surprise surprise. Anyway, I wash the vast majority of my laundry in cold water. When I do towels, particularly kitchen towels, or when the boys used to have blowouts (diapers... nasty) I'd wash those in hot, but overall... I go cold. That's energy saving...

It wasn't done this week, but we have installed a digital thermostat that is supposed to save 30% in our energy bill over a year's span. I have noticed that our air isn't constantly running, even in this heat. Aleks also said he works on projects everyday (that he can't tell me about) that would save the World if successful. Until he discloses and if this comment is randomly selected as the winner, I'm going to claim the prize! I don't believe him.

We have a ton of landscaping in our yard (actually one of our beds is larger than our first apartment). Rather than using mulch for these areas, we use the more economical and renewable resource of pine straw. It's kind of a silly way to save the world, but pine trees always shed needles and we're using A LOT of them to keep our yard looking sharp. We just freshened our landscaping with a ton of fluffy pine straw yesterday, but we've used it the entire 4 years we've been in our home.

Does it count that our boys take baths together? That saves water... (It's probably more out of laziness and the boys like playing together, but whatever...) Or how about that we closed a lot of the vents in the basement since it stays cooler on its own so we're not running even more AC...? Or how about that we reuse the Chinese food containers? (They're not typical ones - totally reusable, dishwasher safe, etc.). Hopefully at least one of these works so I don't feel like this is a "wasted" second post. (Oooh... I hope I win the bag....) :)

Similar to the possible prize, this week my sister purchased 3 resusable snack bags for my family to use (www.sugarbooger.com) to pack snacks, etc. in instead of using zip-lock baggies. We've also done a lot of hiking, etc. and filled and refilled our Nalgene bottles! Only a few plastic bottles of water consumed by our group of 18! Next week I am having a multi family yard sale to prevent lots of stuff from going to the landfill (hopefully!)

This is fun! We recycle almost everything possible. Our town is really helpful about picking things up, and we've taken the stuff that doesn't get picked up to the center. We also send our lawn waste to the town compost area!

I really just divided these to steal tori's idea of maximizing my chances! But...our last one is that we NEVER turn the heat above 68 in the winter. Even on the subzero nights, it's blankets and sweatshirts for us (and Tru!).

Keep up the good work, Jen and friends!

I recycled an aluminum can at work.

AND... (Thanks Tori & Linds for multiple posts) because of this ever-inspiring blog... I am going to do some version of this contest (hopefully) weekly in my envi. sci class. I'm sure I'll get some made up answers (i.e. "I'm going all week without taking a shower"), but I think if I keep challenging the kids with weekly "prizes" they'll hopefully be a bit more conscience of what they're doing to impact the world even if they do make up some exaggerated examples of how they save the world.
